How to Change Your Surname After You’re Married: A Simple, Stress‑Free Guide

If you’re thinking about changing your surname after your wedding, but not sure where to start, you’re definitely not alone it’s one of the most common questions couples ask me. The good news? It’s not complicated. It just takes a little admin, a few forms, and a cup of tea (or something stronger) to get you through it.

Here’s a simple, step‑by‑step guide to help you navigate the process without the overwhelm.

 1. Wait for Your Official Marriage Certificate

The certificate you sign on your wedding day isn’t the one you use to change your name. After your ceremony, I lodge all your paperwork with Births, Deaths and Marriages. I’m very happy to apply for your official government marriage certificate on your behalf, and once it’s processed, you’ll receive an email from the Registry prompting you to pay the $58.10 + registered post $8.10.

Once that’s paid, you can expect your official marriage certificate, the one with the raised seal, to arrive within a couple of weeks. This is your golden ticket. You’ll need it for almost everything.

 2. Update Your Driver Licence First

Most people start with their driver’s licence because it becomes your new primary ID.

In Queensland, you simply take your official marriage certificate to a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre. They’ll update your details and issue a new licence with your married name. This is free of charge.

Once your licence is updated, everything else becomes much easier.

3. Update Your Bank Accounts

Banks will usually ask for:

  • Your new driver’s licence
  • Your official marriage certificate

Some banks let you do this online, but many still require an in‑person visit. Once your bank updates your name, your cards, accounts and statements will follow.

 4. Update Your Passport

If you’re travelling soon, check your passport timing carefully. You can’t travel on a ticket that doesn’t match your passport name.

To update your passport, you’ll need:

  • Your official marriage certificate
  • Your current passport
  • A new passport photo

If your passport is still valid, you may be eligible for a free replacement, depending on how long it has left before expiry.

5. Update Medicare

You can update your name on Medicare through:

  • The Medicare app
  • Your MyGov account
  • A service centre

They’ll ask for your official marriage certificate and updated ID.

6. Update Your Workplace & Everyday Accounts

Once your main ID is sorted, everything else is easy. Work through your list:

  • Workplace/HR
  • Superannuation
  • Electoral roll
  • Utilities
  • Insurance
  • Online shopping accounts
  • Frequent flyer programs
  • Social media (if you want to)

Most of these can be updated online with no fuss.

7. Take Your Time. There’s No Deadline

There’s no rule saying you must change your surname immediately. Some couples do it straight away, some wait a few months, and some keep their surname exactly as it is.

Your name is yours. Change it only if and when it feels right.
