Do You Sign Your Maiden Name or Married Name on Your Wedding Day? Let’s Clear It Up

Let’s talk about signing the marriage documents on the day of your ceremony. It’s one of those tiny details couples often wonder about, and the answer is simple, stress free and very official.

Here it is:

💛 You always sign using your current legal name.

That means the name you use before the ceremony, your maiden name, your existing surname, your legal name as it appears on your ID.

Even though you are getting married that day, your married name does not exist yet in the eyes of the law. Your new surname only becomes official after your marriage is registered and you apply to change it with the relevant authorities.

So on the day, when we gather around the signing table and you pick up that pen, you will sign exactly as you are right now, your legal name, your signature, your identity as it stands.

Why is this the rule?

Because the marriage documents are legal records. They must match your current identification, and they must reflect who you are at the moment you sign them. Your married name is something you adopt after the paperwork is processed, not during the ceremony itself.

🌿 What happens after the wedding?

Once your marriage is registered, you can apply for your official marriage certificate. With that, you can update your surname with:

• Births Deaths and Marriages • Passport Office • Driver licence • Medicare • Banks and financial institutions • Workplace and HR • Any other accounts or memberships

Some couples change their name straight away. Others wait a little while. Some keep their surname exactly as it is. All options are perfect, valid and completely yours to choose.

📝 What I take care of for you

I, as your celebrant, will lodge your marriage documents with Births Deaths and Marriages on your behalf. If you would like, I am also happy to apply for your official marriage certificate for you, saving you the admin and making the process as smooth as possible.

💌 And after your ceremony…

Once I have lodged your documents with BDM, I will send you an email with clear, simple information about how to change your surname, should you choose to. No guesswork, no confusion, just a friendly guide to help you through the next steps.

🎉 So on the day…

Sign your maiden name. Sign your current surname. Sign the name that is legally yours in that moment.

And then celebrate the fact that you are officially married, and ready to step into whatever name, identity and future feels right for you.
