What a Celebrant Really Does (Spoiler: The Ceremony Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg)
Most people see a celebrant standing at the front, speaking beautifully, guiding a couple through their vows… and assume that’s the job. But honestly? That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Being a celebrant, especially a sole trader working completely on your own, means wearing about twelve hats before you even step into ceremony mode. There’s no team, no colleagues down the hall, no admin department, no marketing crew. It’s just me, my laptop, my sparkly top, and a whole lot of heart.
Here’s what couples don’t see:
Story‑Gatherer & Scriptwriter
I spend hours learning your story, understanding your personalities, your quirks, your values, your vibe. Then I craft a ceremony that feels unmistakably you — not a template, not a copy‑paste job, but a bespoke piece of writing designed to make your guests say, “That was so them.”
Researcher & Legal Brain
Behind the scenes, I’m managing legal paperwork, staying up to date with legislation, completing annual OPD, and making sure every detail is correct so your marriage is recognised without a hitch.
Admin Department (aka… me)
Emails, invoices, timelines, questionnaires, follow‑ups, reminders, file organisation, calendar management — all done solo. Every couple gets personalised communication, and that takes time, care, and a very organised brain.
Rehearsal Guide & Ceremony Coach
I help you feel confident, calm, and ready. I guide your wedding party, explain the flow, troubleshoot nerves, and make sure everyone knows where to stand, when to walk, and how to breathe.
On‑the‑Day Ninja
Straightening chairs. Fixing veils. Calming nerves. Managing microphones. Coordinating with photographers. Keeping the energy warm and steady. And yes — occasionally catching a runaway bouquet or wrangling an enthusiastic pug.
Marketing Team of One
Social media, website updates, blogs, SEO, captions, reels, photos, branding — all created by me, in between ceremonies, meetings, and scriptwriting.
Emotional Support Human
I’m there for the wobbles, the excitement, the overwhelm, the “is this normal?” moments. I hold space for you, cheer for you, and help you feel grounded in the lead‑up to one of the biggest days of your life.
And then… the ceremony.
The part everyone sees. The part that looks effortless. The part that’s only possible because of everything that happens behind the scenes.
Being a celebrant is running a business, crafting a story, managing legalities, supporting humans, and creating magic, all as a one‑woman show. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
